By 1981, the Fleetwood Mac singer was already a rock and roll star, but her first solo album made her an icon. Recorded between Mac's Tusk and Mirage, the album gave Nicks space to explore a softer, more mystical side of her songwriting while drawing on the strength of her collaborators. The title track opens the record with ethereal grace. Part hymn, part incantation and led by Nicks' unmistakable voice. 'Kind of Woman' follows with melancholy poise, before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers join for 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around', a smoky, driving gem that merges Petty's rock edge with Nicks' haunted charm. 'After the Glitter Fades' is an underated country ballad with Roy Bittan's piano and Dan Dugmore's pedal steel underscoring the song's beauty. Then comes the immortal 'Edge of Seventeen', one of Nicks' fiercest vocal performances. Don Henley's duet on 'Leather and Lace' glows with tenderness, while 'Outside the Rain' and 'The Highwayman' close the record on wistful, windswept notes. Stevie's most important release - lightning in a bottle and one of the best debut albums of the 80s.
