Nirvana : In Utero A-R2 / B-R1 1st Press (USA) Limited Edition Clear Vinyl 1993

This relatively rare and highly collectable limited edition clear vinyl pressing is absolutely stunning!  I know this pressing is often regarded as the best and having listened to this one in full I cannot disagree with that.  The clarity, power, depth and resonance of the audio is just on another level.  The vinyl has been so well preserved and because of that the original sonic quality has 100% been retained.  I cannot put into words just how STUNNING the audio is!  'As new' is a correct description and that is no exaggeration and this easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE archive classic.  Now over 30 years old there cannot be many around today as pristine as this.

The cover is in excellent condition with only the opening edge having a little wear - as can be seen it has 'Special Limited Edition Disc' printed at the bottom of the front cover.  The lyric inner just has one split and a little creasing.

This limited edition first press was limited to 25,000 on clear vinyl so understandably is very collectable today... and especially in this condition!

Visual description

The clear vinyl is in lovely condition and still retains that original visual 'look' with no marks or scratches.  Looking under a bright light I can only see a small number of faint superficial hairlines that have no affect on the audio.  The labels are super clean with only a little spindle wear.

Play grading  

The entire intro on 'Serve The Servants' has no background and Cobain's opening vocal has no interference either.  It continues to play with exceptional power and depth and... with no intrusion on the audio.  In essence this opening track could not play any better, there are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and it provides a Mint start to the album.

The percussive opening on 'Scentless Apprentice' is 'as new' and rest of the intro is equally as strong.  The first vocal is faultless and the Go away, get away vocal throughout is so powerful and has no distortion on the top end.  The clarity from start to finish is perfect and what you really notice is how strong and deep the audio is, helped in no small measure by Novoselic's heavy bass sound.  This track also deserves to be graded as Mint

'Heart-Shaped Box' has just one light static tick on the quiet intro and then plays with stunning quality from then on.  There is no intrusion on the audio and every verse and chorus play to perfection.  There is not even a single dust tick let alone anything more.  Immense power and definition and a Mint- track at the very least.

The intro on 'Rape Me' has just one mega light tick but again the clarity is astounding.  It continues to play with sublime quality and there are just no negatives.  The quieter verse near the end has no background and the final powerful vocal cannot be faulted either.  I will say Mint- but I'm sure I would be forgiven if Mint was given.

The quiet intro on 'Frances Farmer...' plays with perfect clarity and this high end standard is kept up throughout.  The power and depth of the audio is comparable to a record that has not been played and the sonic quality can only be described 'as new'.  Cobain's vocal is as raw and raucous as ever and the guitar work is of course on another level.  Another Mint track.

'Dumb' is relatively quiet by Nirvana standard and yet the clarity of sound from start to finish is superb.  There are only a couple of ticks at the end of the highest calibre.  There is no interference and Mint is well deserved.

'Very Ape' on S2 plays with great quality from the get go.  The intro is flawless as is the first vocal and it proceeds in the same exact way.  As stated this pressing is often regarded as sonically the most impressive and that sound quality is very much in evidence here.  The audio is again so strong and deep and as there is zero interference only Mint will do.

The percussive intro from Grohl on 'Milk It' is another example of that stunning sonic quality.  The notes reverberate with incredible depth and the power and depth on Cobain's guitar is just as good.  This intro is Mint and the rest of the classic is just STUNNING!  The quieter sections play with sublime clarity and as for the high octane sections - wow!  The power and definition is just off the scale and this is one you obviously have to turn up to max - there is no distortion.  This is Mint every day of the week!

The quiet vocal intro on 'Pennyroyal Tea' is perfect... as is the rest!  No need to elaborate as it plays to the same high end standard as all the tracks preceding it.  Even the quiet vocal passages play beautifully with no intrusion.  A stunning Mint version.

The high powered intro on 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter' plays with tremendous power and depth and this continues into the first vocal.  From then on there is no interference - the vocals are so strong and the end instrumental is just fantastic!  Pure Mint audio from start to finish.

It doesn't get any more powerful than 'Tourette's' and I am pleased to say it plays with unrivalled force and violence throughout.  Mint

The intro on 'All Apologies' has no background and Cobain's first vocal is on a par with that.  The chorus is faultless and it continues to play with a clarity and power that is second to none.  Once again you can hear each note so clearly and that is even more impressive when you consider this is the final track on the side.  The end vocal sequence is so strong and clean and again this has to be graded as Mint - what an incredible album!

In summary this limited edition first pressing plays to the highest standard possible with no interference of any kind and as always I have listened to every track in full so as to give a 'complete' grading.  I know this pressing is highly sought after due to its sonic quality but when you find one as clean as this the sonic 'landscape' is even more enhanced you could say.  The power and definition of the audio is STUNNING and the clarity of sound is also exceptional.  Yes there is some spindle wear (not too much) but in all honesty it plays like it has never been on a turntable before, I cannot overstate just how wonderful the audio is!  It is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing and would grace any collection.

The Cover & Lyric Inner

The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear.  Bit of a strange one in a way because the top and bottom edge and spine have no wear shelf wear but the opening edge does have some handling wear but not an excessive amount.  The corners are super clean and the front cover is unmarked with just one minor crease top right and an even smaller one bottom right.  The back cover is perfect and both sides have retained the original colour perfectly.  A superb example overall.

The paper lyric inner does have quite a large split on the bottom edge and a little creasing but is very clean without any marking.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
