Nirvana : Nevermind A-1 / B-2 1st Eurogram Press (Spain) 1991

This first pressing was produced in Spain and plays with stunning audio on both sides.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is phenomenal and the only interference are two light dull clicks on the final track.  Aside from that the sonic quality really is of the highest standard, I cannot fault.  Pure power and no distortion.  The vinyl is visually very impressive and has clearly not been played very much based on the audio, the visual 'look' and the zero spindle wear on the labels.  Not quite a final upgrade but not far from it!

The cover is in superb condition with no obvious wear and the inner sleeve (with upside monkey) is very clean with just one small bottom edge split.

There are two Spanish first press variants and this one is known as the Eurogram variant.  Eurogram was a small pressing plant owned by Polygram Records and all the info on this pressing can be found on Discogs.  Interestingly the cover does say Printed in Germany on the back.

Visual description

The vinyl is in superb condition with a lovely glossy sheen and no marks or scratches.  All I can locate under a strong light are a few very faint superficial hairlines that have no affect on the audio.  The labels are unmarked and I cannot make out any spindle wear.

Play grading  

The classic 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' plays with superb audio from the get go.  The intro plays with great clarity and power, a couple of barely audible statics only, and the first verse and chorus are just spectacular!  It continues to play with outstanding sonic quality with no intrusion of any kind.  There is a real sense of power and depth and the fade out has only a minor hint of light static right at the very end, hardly worth a mention really.  This has to be Mint- at the very least.

The intro on 'In Bloom' plays with impeccable clarity and depth and the opening vocal from Cobain has no background.  In fact this sound 'quality' is prevalent throughout and 'as new' sums it up perfectly.  Mint all the way.

'Come As You Are' has only a couple of mega quiet statics on the intro and then plays so clearly from then onwards.  Another classic showing the vinyl has been so well looked after and not often played.  No clicks, pops or static and again only a couple of minor statics on the outro.  Mint-

'Breed' plays with supreme power from start to finish with no interference.  Again the sonic quality is of the highest quality and Mint is 100% deserved.

The bass intro on 'Lithium' has no background and the first vocal is just as 'clean'.  It continues to play with exceptional audio through every section and there is no distortion on the top end.  Wow it plays well!  Another Mint track.

The acoustic quiet intro on 'Polly' plays perfectly and the first verse and chorus is just as strong.  This clarity is very much in evidence as you progress further and Novoselic's bass adds so much to the overall sound... as it does on every track truth be told!  The final verse has a couple of minor ticks and I do mean minor!  For a final track to play as clearly as this is a rarity and I am confident in grading it as Mint- such is quality.  What.  A.  Side!

'Territorial Pissings' has only one very quiet static on the 'intro' and as the volume increases the playback is stunning.  The entire track just emanates power and the audio definition cannot be faulted.  A touch of light static for 0.25 of a second right at the end!  Perhaps I should grade as Mint but I will Mint- just to be cautious :-)

'Drain You' plays with genuine power and depth from start to finish with only a couple of static ticks at the end of the fade out.  Mint-

The heavy bass intro on 'Lounge Act' plays perfectly and the rest of the track is of the same high end standard.  There is no interference and yes Mint is deserved.

Both 'Stay Away' and 'On A Plain' play with superb audio.  The sonic quality is comparable to all the preceding tracks and there is no background at all.  Despite nearing the end of the record the playback is flawless - the power and depth of audio is equal to how it would have sounded back in '91 and they grade as Mint

The quiet intro on 'Something In The Way' plays so clearly with only a couple of mega quiet ticks and Cobain's first vocal has only the bare minimum of light static which is so much in the background anyway.  The first chorus plays with very clear audio i.e. no intrusion and the next verse has only a couple of dull sounding light clicks.  The remainder plays perfectly and I believe Ex+ is a fair assessment of the audio.  This is a quiet track of course and yet the overall clarity is very impressive.  Great depth of sound also.

In summary this first pressing plays to a superb standard with hardly any interference, just two dull clicks on the final track.  Even then this quiet track still plays so well and these clicks are not very intrusive at all.  The clarity, depth and power across the entire album is stunning and there cannot be many around today that play as well as this one.  A relatively rare pressing it has been very well preserved down the years and only very lightly played in my opinion.

The Cover & Lyric Inner

The iconic cover is in lovely condition with hardly any wear.  There is just one small rub mark on the top edge and that's about it!  The bottom edge is perfect as is the spine, the corners are incredibly clean and the opening edge is pristine also.  The front cover is unmarked and the back cover is in superb shape with only a couple of very small minor rubs next to the spine.  This is one stunning example!

The inner sleeve with the upside down monkey image is in excellent shape with just one small split on the bottom, no marking and hardly any creasing.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
