This compilation album contains raw live music recorded between 1989 and 1994. 

"Kurt Cobain's former bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl clearly had an agenda in compiling From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, the second of what will no doubt be a long line of posthumous Nirvana albums. Because of its somber, intense nature, the first post-Cobain release, MTV Unplugged in New York, was largely perceived as music for a wake--an impression reinforced by MTV's constant airings of the special in the days following Cobain's suicide. But that acoustic detour aside, the Nirvana live experience was always about displaying a lust for life--not a death wish--with all the energy the musicians could muster. Wishkah offers 16 songs spanning the band's career, all delivered in the loudest, most frenzied, and sometimes the sloppiest versions imaginable. In the opening "Intro," a snippet of pre-show noise, Cobain screams his heart out in joyful contrast to the haunted screams on "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." Then the group launches into "School," which ends with the spirited chorus "Don't be sad." Indeed, it's impossible to dwell on the maudlin when listening to these renditions of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Sliver," "Heart-Shaped Box," and "Negative Creep"--they're too loud and too full of life..." - Jim Derogatis

Recorded in November 1993, less than six months before singer Kurt Cobain killed himself, Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged is a watershed document that presents a band at the peak of its powers. Unlike any other “unplugged” affair, the diverse album is not a simple stripped-down regurgitation of greatest hits or a cash-it-in set of nostalgic favorites. Rather, the live effort is among the most emotionally naked spectacles ever released—an album so starkly intense and profoundly personal, it’s impossible not to get chills down the spine.

Made primarily with acoustic instruments—Grohl even trades sticks for brushes, Krist Novoselic picks up an accordion, and cellist Lori Goldston prominently figures in the arrangements—Unplugged in New York reveals Nirvana’s folksier side and clear ambition to move beyond abrasive rock. The set list is as surprising as the stylistic makeover. Save for renditions of “All Apologies” and “Come As You Are,” the adventurous material includes brooding covers of the Meat Puppets' “Lake of Fire,” “Plateau,” and “Oh Me” as well as harrowing versions of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World,” and the Vaselines’ “Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam.”

And then there’s the heart-shattering climax. Intensely private and disturbingly primal, Nirvana’s rendition of the Leadbelly standard “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” takes its place among the most cathartic songs ever committed to record. It’s the musical equivalent of the insides of Cobain’s soul being ripped out and put out display for all to see.

Kurt Cobain Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings includes the highly anticipated soundtrack on Double LP, an aural complement to the documentary in both concept and experience. Comprised from various early and raw cassette recordings made by Kurt alone, the soundtrack allows a rare, unfiltered glimpse into Cobain’s creative progression from early song snippets and short demos to musical experiments and ultimately, pieces of songs or lyrics that eventually appeared on later Nirvana albums.

This double LP contains the deluxe 31 track album. 

The title, Kurt Cobain Montage of Heck, takes its name from a musical collage that was created by Cobain with a 4-track cassette recorder in 1988, of which there are two versions; one is about thirty-six minutes long and the other about eight-minutes long. Several of the film's scenes were animated by Stefan Nadelman and Hisko Hulsing.
