UK LABEL NORTHERN SOUL
I'll be auctioning off a lot of UK label singles over the next year(s), all taken from my own large collection. I've decided to concentrate on collecting US releases, and only keep a few UK label records. Among them are some very collectable 45s indeed, so make sure you don't miss any.
A while ago, I sold some UK Chess demos on these pages, including stuff by The Tiffanies, The Knight Brothers, Ramsey Lewis, etc. I'm now going to list what I've got left of the black Chess series.

After many years appearing on the Pye International imprint in the UK, the Chess group of labels (Chess, Checker, Cadet - and it's earlier incarnation, Argo - Cadet Concept, etc) were given their own label by Pye. This was the black Chess label, which kicked off late in 1964. The releases up to 8041 had gold lettering, while the releases after had silver lettering.
In over four years perusing eBay, I've never seen this one for sale - not even in the state this copy is in. I'm loathe to sell this, because even a confirmed atheist like me needs his fix of this beautiful slice of gospel with a beat. It's an uplifting sound, with lots of churchy organ refrains over a finger-clicking rhythm. There's another good Northern side on the flip.
I paid an incredible £5 for this back in 1978, but it was notes well spent in any condition. It's a big money-spinner on Checker's Gospel Series label, and also a nice price on UK black Chess. The Gospel Classics recorded this just after the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. It was a time of riots, arson, bloodshed and killings (nearly as bad as a Stoke v Millwall crowd). The group's plea for "More Love" was felt throughout the U.S. of A. The message was a universal one, though I can't imagine it sold many copies over here.
I treat my records better than I do my wife (of course), but I have no influence on what others have done in the past. This copy has certainly seen better days. There are lots of "spiders webs", but the A-side plays with only some minor clicks near the beginning. It certainly sounds better than it looks, and would certainly sound OK for a DJ. There are a lot of loud audible clicks on the B-side, particularly at the beginning, but eventually they settle down and virtually disappear.
A small sticker was stuck on the A-side, and it came off leaving a tear (invisible at 8 o'clock on the scan). The B-side is clean, but the original centre has been removed.
This record has been played on both sides to verify condition. It comes in my own personalized card cover.
