Description
I am offering an original sealed copy of Artur Schnabel - Beethoven Sonatas Complete on Angel GRM-4005. These recordings were sponsored by the Beethoven Society in England starting in 1932. Schnabel had been long established as an expert Beethoven interpreter and he was in his 50s when he made these recordings. Schnabel really didn't like recordings, because he thought they seemed too permanent and he wanted the freedom to change his mind about any particular interpretation. These recordings were made on 78's. This set is sonically superior to the RCA LM 9500 set, which came out in 1956. Included with this set is a booklet with rare photos courtesy of Schnabel's son, Karl Ulrich.
If you are someone who is bothered by hiss or other 78 artifacts, you would do well to seek out either Backhaus or Kempff in their stereo versions. But, if you go for the interpretations, Schnabel is very hard to beat. I have been a fan for over 60 years and Schnabel was who brought me to Beethoven.
This is a sealed box set. There is a little wear on the bottom left corner of the box. Also, there is a 6" split in the shrink wrap on the front. Those bars of light at the bottom of the photos is just a reflection from the styrofoam sheet it is resting on. There is no discoloration. Otherwise, this is a wonderful copy of this masterpiece which is nearly 60 years old now.
