Description
Here it is- a recording of NY Giants Baseball announcer Russ Hodges calling the bottom of the ninth inning in the 1951 playoff game against the Brooklyn Dodgers.The Dodgers had a 4-1 lead when the Giants came up in the bottom of the ninth. That half inning became historical as the Giants beat the Dodgers and Russ Hodges shouted "The Giants Win The Pennant" (3 times). This recording (and the broadcast of that game) was made possible by Chesterfield cigarettes. The 12" by 12" cover of this recording shows Russ Hodges in the announcing booth with his Chesterfield. A sketch of the Polo Grounds is shown behind him. In order to get this special recording, you needed to be a member of the Chesterfield 3 to 1 Club. The cover of this recording still has plenty of color. It has been taped on all three sides, but this does not detract much from the exciting cover. There is also a small shamrock taped to the upper left of the cover. The actual 78 RPM record is from 1952. On the label, it says that this was "a limited-edition recording exclusive to the members of the Chesterfield 3 to 1 Club." I have dealt in 78 RPM records many times before, but I have rarely seen such a beautifully clean record. I cannot see a scratch on it! I wonder if it was ever played before and the original owner just kept it on display for sentimental reasons. I cannot test a 78, but I am amazed at just how clean this record is! A real, beautiful 59 year old souvenir of the days when New York had three major league baseball teams. Baseball memorabilia at its best!
