This beautiful and rare LP from Epic (LC 3034, US pressing, gold radial label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features violinist Nap de Klijn and pianist Alice Heksch in sublime performances of 4 Violin Sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, all warmly recorded in the Bachzaal, Amsterdam, in June 1951.

The exact contents are as follows, all works by W.A. Mozart:

Violin Sonata No. 18 in G Major K. 301

Violin Sonata No. 21 in E minor K. 304

Violin Sonata No. 26 in B-flat Major K. 378

Violin Sonata No. 27 in G Major K. 379

This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who cherish the art of the violin or these remarkable sonatas by Mozart will find much to admire here, the two soloists well-balanced and superbly paired each inspiring the other to further heights of imagination and expression.

There are splendid liner notes, with musical examples, on the reverse side of the jacket by Eugene Bruck, provided in English only. The extraordinary cover art is uncredited, alas.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the front laminated jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, this is close to NM. There is faint shelfwear and mild discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.
