redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and exceedingly rare 3 LP box set from London (LLA-52 (3), LPs pressed in by Decca in England / box printed in the USA, red/silver labels – ED1, mono – no stereo edition exists) features legendary cellist Zara Nelsova’s integral survey of Ludwig van Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, warmly recorded at Decca’s West Hampstead Studio No. 3, London, during May and June 1956.

The pianist throughout is the great Artur Balsam, whom Yehudi Menuhin once described as one of the few 'indispensible ones', so highly did he regard the latter's musicianship and pianism, and so it proves here.

During the 1950’s Nelsova acquired the sobriquet ‘Queen of the Cello,’ (see Tully Potter’s indispensible monograph on the cellist in the February 2003 issue of the Strad) and her masterly, aristocratic playing in Bach’s “Everest” for the cello certainly explains why – not to be missed.

Included are the following works of Beethoven:

Cello Sonata No. 1 in F Major Op. 5 No. 1

Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor Op. 5 No. 2

Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major Op. 69

Cello Sonata No. 4 in C Major Op. 102 No. 1

Cello Sonata No. 5 in D Major Op. 102 No. 2

12 Variations for Cello and Piano in F Major Op. 66 on 'Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen' from Mozart's The Magic Flute

7 Variations for Cello and Piano WoO 46 on 'Bei Männern' from Mozart's The Magic Flute

12 Variations for Cello and Piano in G Major WoO 45 on a Theme from Handel's Judas Macchabée

These remarkable recordings were produced by James Walker. The interior panels of the box contain authoritative liner notes by Dyneley Hussey, printed in English only. The striking cover design is uncredited. It should be noted that this remarkably fine copy includes all three of the original inner sleees.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is near-MINT. The only flaw barring a MINT grading concerns a small circular catalog sticker taped to the upper spine (and a second one to the rear panel). None of the text along the spine is obscured, however. There are no seamsplits, corner breaks, bends, or other defects and the box remains solid, bright, glossy and highly attractive – a superb collector's copy.

The condition of the three original inner sleeves is EXCELLENT. All free of seamsplits and remain solid, bright, and very attractive.

With one exception, the condition of the 3 LPs is EXCELLENT. The exception is LL.1559, which on one side (Op. 69) contains a small scratch to the First Movement that causes a repetitive tic for about 20 revolutions (less than a minute). No needle jumps. This LP grades as VG. The other 5 sides grade as excellent and while surfaces are not absolutely silent, playback is superb.

Nonetheless, if you cannot live with the flaw to Op. 69 described above and/or must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set. One side is VG, the other 5 EX.

PLEASE NOTE:
This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
