Unlike their eminent contemporaries, the MC5 and Iggy And The Stooges, they are unlikely to find forgiveness. Rock And Roll may have been reinvented as a corporate brand but the New York Dolls have avoided the overly conspicuous taint of the barcode. With marketing men running around buying up the last ciphers of rebellion, how and why have the Dolls managed to remain free? What keeps the Dolls just out of reach of the cool-hungry brigade is their blatant irreverence.
