Description
This is the c1975 third UK pressing of Bryter Layter; the first version with the mid-seventies orange and blue Island labels. The original A-1u / B-1u lacquers were still in use at this stage, so this version is sonically the same as the 1970 and 1972 "pink rim" label pressings (which are so elusive and costly to acquire).
Matrix numbers are: 3 ILPS 9134 A-1u / 3 ILPS 9134 B-1u. The "3s" are hand etched additions to the original machine stamped main matrices, presumably indicating that this was the third (and final) pressing from those lacquers.
This copy plays extremely well throughout; with strong, undistorted sound and only the occasional pop and no more than a hint of crackle in isolated spots. There are two or three clicks as Fly fades out, but that's as bad as it gets anywhere. The vinyl is glossy and almost free of marks.
The record comes with its original black poly-lined Island company inner sleeve, but has now been placed in a new poly sleeve - having been cleaned on my Okki Nokki record cleaning machine.
The labels show some light spindle marks but are clean and undamaged.
The non-textured EJ Day sleeve is in fine shape, exhibiting very little wear. It is totally free from seam splits, tears, writing or any other nasties.
Overall I would grade the sleeve and record respectively as Excellent + / Excellent This is in accordance with the Record Collector magazine system:-
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
