We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a few weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. Nina Simone (1933 – 2003) was one of the greatest and most important American singer-songwriters of the 20th century and her work is still influential today. I Put A Spell On You album is arguably the most accessible and popular of her many albums. It reached no. 9 in the album charts in the UK doing significantly better than it did in Nina Simone’s home country where reached only no. 99. The title track was released as a single in the UK with Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood on the B-side, creating one of the finest song pairings of the period.
This copy of the album is in pretty decent condition. The record has a few visible surface scuffs but I’ve just played it all the way through and these marks are audible only very briefly and faintly. The sleeve is a little bit knoocked about – you should be able to see this from the images above – but is very largely OK. In addition to the visible marks on the sleeve, there is a short tear (1 cm) to the fold at the bottom right corner.
For some reason copies of this album turn up only rarely on the collectors' market so this can be an expensive album to buy these days.This example is perfectly playable but, as I have outlined, is not perfect, so I am giving it a very reasonable start price.
