Nine Inch Nails – Broken (1992)
Following the commercial success of Pretty Hate Machine, Nine Inch Nails' Broken marked a radical shift in sound and intensity. Released in 1992, this EP is an abrasive, industrial-metal assault that showcased Trent Reznor's growing frustration with his record label and personal struggles. The raw aggression of tracks like “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery” introduced a heavier, more distorted sound compared to the synth-driven, darkwave textures of the debut.
Broken was heavily influenced by industrial metal pioneers such as Ministry and Godflesh, with thick, mechanical guitars, relentless drum programming, and a seething, nihilistic tone. The EP won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance (for "Wish") and cemented NIN’s reputation for unfiltered intensity. It also came packaged with a disturbing, controversial short film that matched its violent aesthetic.
Although only eight tracks long (including two hidden songs), Broken set the stage for the even more refined aggression of The Downward Spiral. It remains one of the most vital releases in industrial metal, bridging the gap between underground industrial music and mainstream alternative rock.
