Nirvana In Utero rare Steve Albini mix on
Universal records - Mint condition
I'm a music producer myself so i was very interested to hear Steve Albini's original mix of the album before the whole record company handbags and subsiquent remixing. I managed to find a company selling these a couple of years back and i bought a few copy's, but now i could do with a few quid for some equipment. There is a huge difference in the sound on this mix - a lot more power in general - wider stereo spread, heavier sounding guitars, less compression, and generally a bigger more natural sound. The songs make a lot more sense this way and listening back to the actual release, i feel that some of the original concept was lost in the remixing - its more radio friendly i guess, but lacks in energy and excitement
It was recently discovered in 2003 that the German Universal pressing of Nirvana's "In Utero" was made from the original, unreleased Steve Albini master tape.
- In 2003 what is believed to be the original Albini mix of In Utero was issued as a vinyl-only release by Universal Records in the UK. This is believed to be the result of a mistake at the factory when the wrong master tapes were used to have the album recut. The discs were manufactured in Germany. They can be indentified by the numbers A33 9124 536 S1 320 pressed into the deadwax, or the catalog numbers 424 536-1 on the disc.
