Norman Greenbaum, Spirit in the Sky Reprise 6365, 1969, Mint - Near-Mint
"Spirit in the Sky" was a massive hit in late 1969/70. Unfiortunately for Mr. Greenbaum, its historical place firmly puts him in the "one hit wonder" category, despite his continued musical career.
The song was an unusual mixture of heavy fuzz guitar-driven boogie rock, with a gospel flavoring. Despite its reference to Jesus, the song was not intended as some sort of Christian rock anthem, Greenbaum is in fact Jewish. There is no deep meaning, according to Greenbaum, beyond a statement of wishing to "die with one's boots on." He was inspired to write the song after seeing country western star Porter Wagoner sing a gospel tune on TV, and decided on a whim that he could do that, too.
The song shot to number 1 and appears on many 'greatest songs' lists, and has been widely praised by several popular musicians. It has been used many times in movies and TV commercials, notably Nike.
The album is a solid offering of rock and rhythm and blues, as horns are featured on several tunes. I am reminded of Tower of Power on some of the tunes.
The disc is close to mint condition and plays perfectly. The jacket is near mint with no ring wear, splits or rough corners, except for the cutout corner on bottom right. The shrink wrap is intact, and there are three stickers on it, which I have not tried to remove. The jacket shows no fading... bright white. The original inner sleeve is intact, with some slight fading.
Record has been cleaned and will be shipped in premium archive quality inner sleeve, outside of the jacket, in a quaity LP cardboard mailer with extra cardboard padding.
