Description
Arhoolie 8002 Recorded in Berkeley, California on Oct. 31, 1968.
This was one of the few jazz releases (called "New Music" in the liner notes) on the Arhoolie label, which is known for its blues catalog. There was a lot of music going on in the East Bay area of Oakland/Berkeley, California in the late 1960s, and the Arhoolie label was based in Berkeley at that time. The owner, Chris Strachwitz, felt this music needed to be documented. The better-known musicians on this recording (and they are still obscure) are the drummer, Smiley Winters and saxophonist Bert Wilson (at this time, Bert was teaching his altissimo system to "Tower of Power's" sax player, Lenny Pickett) and alto player Rahim Roach. According to the liner notes, the band was directed by the vibraphonist Dave Wilson (no relation to Bert) and was part of an organization of young artists, dancers, filmakers and actors who "had been working together for more than a year in the San Francisco area, performing mixed-media concerts and have been a mainstay of the Berkeley Jazz Symposia". Other saxophonists on the album are tenor player Dale Reamer; Mike Breen, soprano sax and Rahim Roach, alto sax. Peter Montalbano plays trumpet; Patrick O'Hara, trombone; Robin Young, piano and Chris Amberger, bass. The photos on the album cover are from a filming of the Creative Arts Guild at the Public Television station KQED, where dancers and painters shared the stage with the musicians.
This LP is in VG++ condition, the vinyl is like new. The cover has slight wear on both upper corners and a 2" edge split on the bottom near the spine. The spine is in good condition with the title and catalog number completely visible.
