Ocean Colour Scene : Moseley Shoals A1/B1/C1/D1 1st Press 1996

This genuine first press plays with superb audio with only one / two seconds of interference!  There are two clicks on 'Fleeting Mind' on S2 caused by a tiny 'speck'!  I have tried to remove it but no luck - if the winning bidder has longer nails than me they may well succeed but don't quote me on that!  Aside from that this classic album plays with stunning clarity, power and depth and I really cannot explain just how good!  The sonic quality is outstanding and this album is now 27 years old of course.  The vinyls are visually very impressive and have definitely not been over-played.

The cover is in superb shape with only very minimal wear and the lyric inners are very clean with only one bottom edge split on each, not large ones though.

Visual description

The vinyls are in lovely condition and still have a very impressive glossy sheen with no scratches.  There are a few of those faint 'sweepy' fade lines that you often find on 90s vinyl (caused during the pressing process) and a small number of very faint hairlines and that one tiny speck on S2.  The labels are unmarked with some spindle wear but not too much.

Play grading

The intro on 'The Riverboat Song' plays to perfection and the opening vocal is just as strong.  From then on it plays with great power and depth and there is no background of any kind.  Every vocal and instrumental section play with sublime quality and I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint - genuine classic from the 90s.

The quiet intro on 'The Day We Caught The Train' is 'as new' and this quality is prevalent throughout.  I've always thought this track had a Beatles-esque vibe and you certainly can't fault the audio here.  A superb version with no distortion on the top end.  Mint

'The Circle' rounds off S1 with imperious quality once more.  Stunning power and definition and... Mint.  Despite being the final track on the side there is no inner groove distortion.

The first vocal on 'Lining Your Pockets' is close to perfect with only a couple of very quiet static ticks and the first verse does indeed play with flawless clarity.  The next chorus is just as clean and it continues in the same precise way.  This is of course a relatively quiet track which makes the clarity of sound even more impressive.  You can hear each note so succinctly and this easily deserves a Mint- grade.

The gentle acoustic intro on 'Fleeting Mind' plays so clearly for the majority but... does have two static clicks due to that tiny 'speck' that just refuses to move!  The rest of the track plays with stunning precision but I will have to grade as Ex+ rather than Mint due to that annoying speck!

'40 Past Midnight' plays with exceptional audio from start to finish with no interference and Mint is fully deserved.

'One For The Road' on S3 plays with outstanding audio from the very first note.  I play every second of every track and I did not even 'pick up' one dust tick here let alone anything more.  A great track with Mint audio including the fade out.

The quiet intro on 'It's My Shadow' has no background and the first verse and chorus are just as strong.  The mid solo is 'as new' and the remainder plays to the same high end standard.  Mint

'Policemen & Pirates' ends the side with supreme quality and no distortion.  Another Mint track.

'The Downstream' plays beautifully with no interference.  Again you can't help but admire the clarity of sound - a small number of barely audible dust ticks that really do not warrant a mention!  So many quiet sections and yet the sonic quality is STUNNING throughout.  An incredible Mint version.

'You've Got It Bad' plays with great power, depth and clarity from start to finish with... no interference.  Stunning precision - 'as new' audio and Mint

The very quiet acoustic intro on 'Get Away' plays with wonderful clarity and the opening vocal is just as clean.  The second verse has just one minor tick and from then on it plays with sensational audio.  Cradock's work is stunning and if I had to say anything in terms of background there is just a couple of seconds of very quiet static - no more than that.  Quite a progressive track really and the quiet mid instrumental is just superb!  The final instrumental / vocal is faultless and that long final note has no background at all.  I am 100% confident in grading it as Mint- it truly is a superb track.

In summary this very first pressing plays with such quality across all the four sides and if it wasn't for that darn 'speck' this would be the perfect album!  It plays with great power and depth during the more dynamic sections and with such delicate precision during the quieter moments, the sonic quality is just STUNNING!  And what makes it even more impressive sonically is that there is no distortion either.  The winning bidder will not be disappointed with this!

The Gatefold & Lyric Inners

The cover is in lovely condition with only very minimal wear.  The edges are so clean and the wide spine is also in superb shape.  In fact the only 'real' wear is a little creasing at the top of the spine and one tiny crease on the lower right corner of the front cover.  The front itself is extremely clean without any marking and still has the sticker top left.  Both the back cover and the inside of the gatefold are immaculate.  A fine Ex++ cover and I'm sure many would grade higher.

The two lyric inners are unmarked with no creasing and just have one small(ish) bottom edge split on each.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
