"Offshore comes correct with his mini-album of crooked beats for Big Dada. Ever since his first EPs on Disboot and Numbers, Ewan Robertson aka Offshore has stood out as a stranger anomaly among the burgeoning Scottish hip hop scene which birthed him. Taken on a functional, dancefloor level, his Neptunes-debted beats knock as good any, but there's always been something more wayward and intriguing about his choice of melodic tone and texture, a crucial facet which he brilliantly explores on 'Bake Haus'. In this context, the record is linked to his homeland to an extent few of his peers have managed; at many times throughout the record it feels like we're listening to a crunk BoC, from the woozy, faded synth loop of 'Fraser' to the tantalising flutes infusions of 'Downer' and 'Downer 2', while the syrupy drip of country guitars on 'Black Bun' even recalls Tom Waits' seafaring '80s output. Make no mistake though, Offshore is a beats man, and there's some crackers here, from the Jam City-like hyperfunk swerve of 'Back Wynd' to the laser-guided bounce of 'Slip' to the holo'd, harmonious thunk of 'Venom'. For G's who like it odder, this is recommended!"
