Description
I've decided to sell off a few test pressings of 7"s from an indie label I used to own here in Sydney (called Phantom Records)...each of them I only kept one of. The rest were given to the bands, or my original partner, Dare, may have had the odd early one as well (pre-1996). Most likely you're not gonna see another one unless band members can be talked outta them. Always a possibility I guess.
Anyway, here goes:
ARTIST: ONE MILLION PIECES -
TITLES: "NOTHING WILL CHANGE" / "SORRY"...'A' side is an absolute classic! - full of the crucial 3: guts, guitars & melody - it belts into it from the opening note and doesn't let up...band was a 3-piece, and damn powerful one at that...and this was their pinnacle...pounding rhythm section underlays the whole thing, with fuzzy riffing guitars driving it all along plus such killer vocals and subject matter (it's written from the perspective of a guy who's just died in a car crash and his soul is still hovering around the site: "there's not enough me left to put in a paper bag"...and..."up to an hour ago, nothing could have ever stopped this show, my opinion of myself is irrevocably changed"...it gets better...)...the lead breaks are awesome and melodic as all hell too...it's SUCH a killer single...
FORMAT: …vinyl 7" single TEST PRESSING… LABEL: (PHANTOM) .
CAT. #: PH-42 .
EVENTUAL RELEASE DATE: 1991 .
PRESSED IN: AUSTRALIA .
Comes in its original light-blue die-cut thin card sleeve. Record has plain white labels. The test-press checking lady at Festival (her name was Oriel) was responsible for the very basic info handwritten on 'A' side (in blue pen), plus I wrote the song titles in red pen, and the words "2nd cut" in green, back at the time.
This was cut by legendary cutting engineer Warren Barnett at Festival Records' cutting room, in Pyrmont, Sydney. (Warren had done the cuts for SO many of EMI's releases - he'd spent a lot of years at their cutting room, where he'd been entrusted to cut Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen records, and thousands of others.) Anyway, we'd already done one cut and hadn't been happy with that, so we went in and did this second one. I remember, while in ther, bemoaning my current cashflow situation, and Warren took it upon himself to inscribe "Crippling Financial Debt" into the 'A' side run-off grooves...without any of us knowing until the test pressings came through. (He was responsible for other odd run-off groove announcemenat or humour on odd other releases we did, too.) So the 'B' side was nailed this time, but the band were still not happy with the 'A' side cut...so a third one was done and finally that one was OK'd by all...and it was from that 3rd cut that the eventual release was pressed.
Back to this 2nd one however: it has the never-used 2nd cut on the 'A' side and the same 'B' side cut as used on the released 45. The run-off groove engravings on the 'A' side of this one are quite lengthy:
PH-42 DMX 75507 WB 2C "Crippling Financial Debt" 2:46
compared to the engravings on the 'A' side of the eventual release:
DMX-75507 WRC 2:46
Only 4 of this test pressing were made....other 3 given to the band: again, Nic, Richard, Craig - real decent guys.
CONDITION:
COVER / RECORD: ( - / VG+ )...
LABELS: ( Side One: EX / Side Two: M- )...
If you have any concerns about the accuracy of my gradings, please check my feedback for the odd nice comment from some satisfied folk out there.... (and hopefully you may be able to join their ranks).
