Originally released in 2008, Watershed served as the highly anticipated ninth full-length from Swedish progressive death metal auteurs Opeth, following on from the breakout commercial success of 2005's Ghost Reveries. Noted for being the band's final album to feature any death growls or death metal motifs until 2024's The Last Will & Testament, with the intermittent period focused on their more prog rock proclivities, for many this album marked the end of a specific era for the group, one often considered to be their peak. Their first project to feature guitarist Fredrik Akesson and drummer Martin "Axe" Axenrot, who replaced longtime guitarist Peter Lindgren and drummer Martin Lopez, the shift in line-up is showcased to maximalist degree in the complex percussion and drum-work on the likes of 'The Lotus Eater', with the band toying ever-further with complex time signatures, while melancholic dark-folk acoustic opener 'Coil' featuring Swedish singer Nathalie Lorichs trading off with Mikael Akerfeldt in haunting balladry, is easily one of the most eerily beautiful pieces the band has ever recorded.
