Full title: Doctor Selavy's Magic Theatre (Or Swinging At The Stock Exchange).
No real precedent existed for Richard Foreman’s musical theater madhouse Doctor Selavy’s Magic Theatre. It held forth during the 1972/73 Off-Broadway season, drawing packed houses and rave reviews, plus endorsements from such luminaries as Arthur Miller and Pierre Boulez. The piece had no dialogue and no obvious plot, but instead incorporated 28 songs by composer Stanley Silverman and lyricist Tom Hendry with choreography to tell the story of a man named Ben who was put through a series of treatments by Dr. Selavy (a bad pun on “c’est la vie”).
