The musical's material was inspired by the actual writings and poetry of nearly 200 New York City public school students, aged 7 to 18, which were compiled and edited by teacher Stephen M. Joseph in a 1969 book titled "The Me Nobody Knows: Children's Voices from the Ghetto."
Through a blend of rock music, jazz, and spoken word, the young, multiracial cast performs songs and monologues that touch upon various aspects of inner-city life: poverty, racism, drug addiction, violence, dreams of escape, and moments of simple joy and hope. For example, one segment might feature a child's reflection on their first experience with heroin, while another might express their desires if they "Had a Million Dollars."
The show's power lies in its raw honesty and authentic portrayal of childhood in challenging circumstances, emphasizing the resilience and often surprisingly optimistic spirit of these young individuals. It aimed to bring to the stage the perspectives of a demographic rarely heard in musical theater, offering a poignant and often unsentimental look at their world. The original cast recording captures the impactful songs and performances from this seminal work.
