Description
Hard to find original copy of this important moment in the Sun Records story . The proceeding studio release [ Sun 223 ] is Mystery Train by Elvis who was still under contract when this was recorded in the same month : August 1955 . Sam had yet to define the name of the music he was creating so ‘ Gone Gone Gone ' has a almost hillbilly edge to it . Carl’s girlfriend is ‘ round & fat ‘ & they are going out to square dance & jump tonight . Turn the record over & ‘ Let The Jukebox Keep On Playing ' could be Hank Williams & The Drifting Cowboys . A fiddle & pedal steel homage to a man who after all had only been dead for 2 years & was selling more records than ever . Sam certainly knew where the market was . This original copy came into my collection in the 1970’s via a Southern USA radio station library clear out . I was told that the small 49 cent print related to the royalty cost paid per single air play . My comment at the the time was more likely the payola revenue for plugging it . Comments & advice welcome either way from those more informed . Beware of boot leg copies by checking for push marks which are clearly apparent here . Has that unique Sun vinyl feel of the period thanks to the Sam Phillips aversion to union pressing plants . The last similar copy I can trace that sold at auction in the UK was last year for a hammer price of £130 . No reserve so the best bid & it could be yours .
