Label Conditions: Both immaculate with barely a spindle trace to be seen. Purchased from new by one owner, played once and then stored away. These famous labels are ultra clean and as fresh as day of manufacture.

Rarity: A first issue UK pressing from 1966 is rare, even more so in stereo. And finding a copy that quite honesty could practically pass as new goes beyond rare. Every once-in-a-while something truly exceptional surfaces, and this jazz album giant easily qualifies. A truly strunning example – that is cover, record, sound, and even the inner sleeve – this is reference/archive standard that few examples could hope to beat. For serious analogue jazz fans, this is indispensible and a very rare opportunity.

Original Year of Release: 1959 in the United States. Not issued in the UK until 1966, making this copy a first issue UK pressing.

Brief Info: The third Ornette Coleman album, now regarded as a classic and one of the most important in the history of ‘Free-Jazz’. It even features strongly in all-time great albums within all genres, so good, it is not just for fans of jazz. I do not offer jazz albums often, but when I do, I try to make them very best available, and this easily qualifies. Coleman is a legendary player of the alto saxophone, and actually within the free jazz genre, this one is not too way out – to my ears anyway – I found this immensely enjoyable and actually quite easy (I am a huge fan of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and Krautrock, so more challenging music is hardly an issue for me). Certainly not the ‘out-there’ like some others. This copy is in the most astonishing condition you are likely to see, a truly outstanding stereo original, now over 50-years-old, but almost looking like it was manufactured yesterday. Comparing this to pop or rock music, this is almost like finding a practically unplayed, near mint original ‘Revolver’ or early Led Zeppelin album – but this multiple times rarer due to the numbers sold. A jazz collector’s dream-piece, few would have even bought stereo copies of this legendary album. Take another look at the cover, it’s little short of immaculate and the record the same. There is the gentle traces of inner sleeve dulling on the narrow run-out grooves on side two, minimal, to hardly any on the music areas, and little else to fault to stunning playing surfaces bar a couple of faint, fine hairlines. A record for connoisseurs and an album I am unlikely to forget in a hurry. Some records are special, and this is one of them – a copy time has overlooked and barely even run-in in vinyl terms.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT: a single format with front laminate, the back is totally laminate free, matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd with ‘Patent Pending’ text. The 1966 date-coded inner sleeve is included as seen.

Lamination & Front: If a 50+year-old cover like this cannot be graded near mint, I doubt if any can be. This simply exudes freshness and stunning good looks. Totally age-defying and a pure joy to observe and hold. The laminate retains immaculate shine with barely even a hint of dulling, even under light, and no lifting whatsoever. A small few fine surface creases register little, mostly confined to the edges that few can hope to escape as the barest minimum. One near the top left corner shows a fraction more, but is still very fine and light. The graphic of Coleman is also immaculate with intense deep colour, the white background still very much that – white, not yellowed or toned at all. Also note, this is a dedicated stereo cover as seen at the top. The laminate ends are seen left and right, any fine exposed strips of white are also pure white with no grubbiness or browning. Seeing a vintage cover like this, simply makes you wish all could be the same, but realistically, these only surface occasionally, then on far more common albums.

Cover Back: The back is of the same incredible standard with hardly anything to fault. The white exposed matt card is pure white and ultra fresh with no creasing at all. A small, light handling trace near the left edge towards the bottom, but barely anything else at all. Truly, this comes as close to reminding of new as is almost possible.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth, unworn.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with only a gentle trace of thickening seen near the centre of the front as seen viewed end-on – even this being quite critical. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Immaculate: and to put this into perspective, this white surface is unprotected by laminate. Yes the matt surface is totally exposed, but remains unworn and still pure white, with all text mint as seen. Solid, quite straight with minimal hint of compression, a gentle hint of bowing, but hard to criticise a spine most would dream of seeing on any album. This has been cover-protected from new, the different immediately apparent when seen for real.

Corners: All practically as made front and back with no bashes or dinks, crisp immaculate shape retained.

Cover Summary: Archive quality, expertly stored and appearing barely held or exposed to light, they hardly could, or do get much better. This beautiful item – using the term correctly – should please all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): even plain white inner sleeves of this great age are a thing of beauty when found hardly aged. This is the original, date-coded 036 (March 1966), it is British patented with ‘British and Other Patents Pending’ text. Two crisp, undamaged window circles, the polylining clear and fresh, barely creased with no edge splits or repairs. The white paper has hardly discoloured, even the edges, clearly as well preserved as the rest of the set.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): arguably better. A beautiful visual copy that is very clean with amazing shine and heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played with just a couple of very light and faint hairlines seen critically under bright angled light. The hint of age is light traces of dulling from the polylining mostly seen on the run-out groove areas of side two, any other traces are tiny and faint (and totally harmless). Fifty plus year old records are seldom seen better, more vibrant and fresh looking than this. Visually a supreme record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This legendary jazz album plays up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A true high fidelity recording from way back in 1959 – the cover text describes the technical aspects of recording and manufacture, clearly this was aimed at audiophiles from the time of release. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, the odd faint trace for a second or two at the very start, but disappearing fast, little thereafter. That said, with some very quiet passages of sparse instrumentation, ‘silence’ is nigh-on impossible from any record, let alone one over half-a-century old – but this really does do its very best. Overall, an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades, simply stored away and left untouched. Many collectors put their prized albums direct to tape to preserve what they had, possibly the case here? For sure, few copies will match or outperform this original UK stereo pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, a delight to play with all the warm, pace and rhythm this genre demands. Coleman’s reed-work ultra sharp and crisp, there is zero clipping or distortion to these complex sounds, it hardly gets better. Clearly expertly stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure of the experience when play-grading this free-jazz classic. It will prove beyond difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation to all music lovers – a very rare opportunity.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
