The 1982 film Cat People, directed by Paul Schrader, is a supernatural horror film that reimagines the classic Val Lewton RKO horror film with a more overtly sexual and gothic tone.

The story centers on Irena Gallier (Nastassja Kinski), a beautiful and enigmatic young woman who travels to New Orleans to reunite with her estranged brother, Paul (Malcolm McDowell), a priest. From the moment she arrives, Irena is drawn into a dark, ancestral secret that has plagued her family for generations.

Paul reveals that they are descendants of an ancient race of "cat people" – humans who transform into predatory black panthers when sexually aroused. The only way to break the curse and return to human form after such a transformation is to kill another human, or, for the cat person to mate with another of their kind. If they mate with an ordinary human, the human will die.

Irena finds herself caught between her growing attraction to Oliver Yates (John Heard), a local zoo curator, and the terrifying truth of her family's curse. As her own desires awaken, she struggles to control the monstrous transformation, leading to a series of violent and bloody encounters. Paul, increasingly desperate to continue their bloodline and lift the curse, tries to force Irena to accept their shared destiny and mate with him.

The film explores themes of sexuality, repression, animalistic urges, and the struggle between human desire and monstrous instinct. It's known for its stylish visuals, atmospheric score by Giorgio Moroder, and a more graphic and psychological approach to the horror elements compared to the original.
