The Queen – Flash Gordon (5E-518) LP is the original 1980/1981 US pressing of the band's ninth studio album and their first venture into film scoring. Released by Elektra Records, it is a unique "hybrid" album that blends Queen’s hard rock and synth-heavy sound with dialogue and sound effects from the cult-classic movie.

The Film: High-Camp Sci-Fi

Directed by Mike Hodges and produced by Dino De Laurentiis, Flash Gordon (1980) is a vibrantly colored, over-the-top adaptation of the 1930s comic strip.

  • The Plot: Earth is under attack by Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) of the planet Mongo. New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones), travel agent Dale Arden, and scientist Hans Zarkov travel to Mongo to unite warring factions—including the Hawkmen and the Tree Men—to save Earth.

  • The Atmosphere: The film is famous for its "camp" aesthetic, lavish costumes, and the booming voice of Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan.

The Music: A Rock-Synth Score

Unlike a traditional Queen album, this is primarily an instrumental score. It was one of the first major film scores composed and performed by a rock band.

Side Key Highlights Notable Tracks Side A Sets the stage on Mongo; features the iconic piano-driven anthem. "Flash's Theme," "Football Fight," "The Kiss" Side B Focuses on the battle for Mingo City and the final victory. "Vultan's Theme," "Battle Theme," "The Hero"
  • "Flash's Theme": The only track released as a single. It features the legendary "Flash! A-ah!" chorus and Brian May’s signature "motorcycle" guitar tone.

  • Synthesizers: Following their previous album The Game, Queen fully embraced synths here (specifically the Oberheim OBX) to create a "spacey" atmosphere.

  • Dialogue: The LP is famous for including movie snippets, such as Ming's "Klytus, I'm bored" and Vultan's "Gordon's alive!"
