On the second outing for the Nei 'not the Rutles one'l Innes-convened ensemble project, and with a significant change of register from the 'Beg, Borrow, Play' debut, The Karman Line is one of two records essentially born frmo a single session, split down the middle by mood: the soul-jazz kept to the first, and the cosmic material set aside for this. Steve Parry's horn charts on 'Low Orbit': bassoon, French horn, tuba in combination, pushing the sound weightless, while flute floats accordingly on 'Karman Cantata' and 'All Is', harp laying subtle beneath and piano impressionistic, tinkling and twinkling away. 'Earthly Elements' is the pivot: bass-heavy, percussion-driven, Wickham's tone dropping into Lateef territory.
