Christopher Owens is back on True Panther - the label that put out records by his former band Girls (in 2009 and 2011). Those Girls albums gained worldwide acclaim and acted like a slipstream, ushering the beloved songwriter out of the shadows and into an indie success story. In the years that have followed, fans have held out waiting for a collection of songs that stand up to the level of those early albums. And perhaps it's a coincidence, perhaps not, but Owens is back on top form. The True Panther label has gifted us that collection that's up there with those two classics. It's his solo masterpiece, with otherworldly melodies that carry beautiful, heartfelt lyrics forward, and there's a genuine sense vulnerability that's utterly compelling. It's often thought that the golden age of songwriting was the 60s, but Christopher Owens challenges that orthodoxy and makes us think perhaps it's now, here, with this.
