Description

You are bidding on the following:

Artist: Ocean Colour Scene

Release: Ocean Colour Scene (debut album)

Format: 12” black vinyl pressing plays at 33 1/3 rpm

Label: Fontana

Barcode: 7 31451 226915

Release number: 512 269-1

Release date: 1992

Rarity: this is rare record as on release in 1992, it only got to number 54 in the UK charts, and quickly dropped out of the UK charts. This was released in CD, vinyl and cassette tape, and by far the rarest version is the vinyl record version. The album was later reissued cheaply as a ‘nice price’ discounted CD in 1996 by Fontana off the back of the success of the new ‘Moseley Shoals’ release,  and ultimately achieved a ‘silver’ sales status in the UK market only. (NB. The first pressing CD is rare also and comes with burgundy and gold text and background printing, whereas the much more common ‘nice price’ CD replaces burgundy for dark blue background and gold lettering).  Vinyl sales and production at the point of release in 1992 were at an all-time low, and this release would have a had a very small print run of vinyl! Perhaps the least desirable of their album releases, and the musical style and ‘genres’ are very different from the later 1996 ‘classic sound’, but for OCS completists this will be an important release to secure. I have recently sold my UK-market copies on burgundy and gold lettering on the centre vinyl labelling, and have been stunned to discover a copy in my collection with a different cover,  and blue and gold typeface for the centre vinyl labelling! This is a truly-rare copy and I have never seen another one in my twenty-five years of collecting OCS! I believe that in studying the labelling this is indeed a mega rare Netherlands-produced copy, at a time OCS had zero presence in the EU markets apart from a few promotional gigs.

***This listing is only for the much rarer vinyl 1st and only 1992 pressing***

***This is the rarest variant of the debut 1992 OCS album that I have ever owned on vinyl!! - key differences are

  1. Blue and gold versus UK market-standard burgundy and gold centre labelling
  2. Outer sleeve is a very different finish, with an almost 'laminate' high gloss finish, versus the UK-market 'matt' finish. The colours are also very different and quite stunning! This unique cover is almost a 'purple, versus the dark blues on the UK version. (checkout the photo's showing the variance in finish and colour).

Condition: overall a really solid condition copy, and the record is graded on the following basis:

Outer sleeve: fragile thin card single sleeve is in excellent minus (-) condition, with minor wear points on corners, edges and the spine, minimal if any rubbing and minor creasing. As I state earlier in the description, there is a 'laminate' like finish and just look at the deep shine in the pictures! Nowhere near mint, but a solid and respectable cover with a fully legible spine and no rips or tears.

Inner sleeve: fragile and thin card inner picture sleeve is in excellent minus (-) condition, with no splits or tears and minor creasing and some age yellowing.

Vinyl: this is a single 12"disk vinyl pressing. Surface displays very light non-sounding minor couple of scuffs, moderate handling marks and numerous minor hairlines. Labels have minor spindle marks and overall condition evidences moderate plays. Visually the record is graded at very good condition in line with the 'Record Collector ‘standard. Overall vinyl condition sonically is a good listen, and the record plays to a minimum excellent minus (-) standard with some minor background static and noise, and more moderate occasional 'pops' and background noise on the track 'Penny Pinching Rainy Heaven Days' on side two. (Most tracks play to an excellent standard, so this feels quite isolated and the record may benefit from a professional clean).
