This lovely gatefold LP from Fontana · Philips (876.008 FY, French pressing, red/silver label, heavy jacket / cloth spine, stereo) features David Oistrakh and Isaac Stern in captivating performances of 4 Vivaldi Concerti for Two Violins, all recorded over two sessions, on 24 December 1955 and 10 January 1956, with Members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy conducting, and William R. Smith on harpsichord.
Included are the following works of Vivaldi:

Concerto for Two Violins, Strings and Harpsichord in D minor R. 514 (P. 281)

Concerto for Two Violins, Strings and Harpsichord in C minor R. 509 (P. 436)

Concerto for Two Violins, Strings and Harpsichord in G minor R. 517 (P. 366)

Concerto for Two Violins, Strings and Harpsichord in D Major R. 512 (P. 189)

Although their Bach/Vivaldi album turns up quite frequently, David Oistrakh and Isaac Stern's other collaboration for Columbia – this wonderful brace of Vivaldi 'Double' Concerti – is less often encountered. Paired with quite the finest accompanist of his time, Ormandy provides beautifully shaded support and purists will be pleased to note the use of a harpsichord, and a scaled down Philadelphia Orchestra, in these wonderful recordings.

On the left interior panel of the gatefold jacket, in addition to superb liner notes by Jean Hamond (of l’Accademie du Disque Français), are striking black and white photographic portraits of Stern and Oistrakh.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, this is close to NM. There is slight bumping at corners and mild discoloration, but that is all. There are no bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
