Oistrakh/Fournier: Brahms Double Cto - Columbia SAX

This rare and beautiful LP from Columbia (SAX 2264, Blue & Silver Label, English pressing, stereo, original inner sleeve) features one of the glorious Brahms Double Concertos on record, pairing the great David Oistrakh with the aristocratic Pierre Fournier. Recorded 29 February - 3 March 1956 in the fabled acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall, this Walter Legge produced recording caught his Philharmonia Orchestra on resplendent form, with the under-rated Alceo Galliera on the podium.

This leonine, richly expressive account captured every artist involved at the very peak of his powers, surpassing even the formidable, but more febrile 1939 Heifetz/Feuermann/Ormandy account as well as the 1951 Milstein/Piatigorsky/Reiner rendition, both for RCA Victor. Filling out the disc is a deeply burnished account of Brahms’s Tragic Overture Op. 81.

CONDITION: The condition of the jacket is near-MINT (a discreet stamper mark and outline of a former price sticker to the upper-right front panel, very minor discoloration to the rear panel; however, the album is without creasing, seamsplits, nor owner’s markings. The fine glossy finish is perfectly intact, as is the laminate, the whole very solid and quite handsome.)

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and plays without defect (no tics, clicks, or pops – clean, quiet surfaces.) All-in-all, very much a lovely collector’s copy of a remarkable recording.

All LPs are play-graded and carefully cleaned and all records are provided with a new 3ml clear polysleeve.
