Up for Auction are 8 WOR- Mutual “Crime Club” Shows (30 minutes each) broadcast in 1946 and 1947 on 16 transcription discs. Crime Club was sustaining and aired on the WOR/ Mutual network. Each transcription disc is 15 minutes and a set of 2 transcriptions contains one 30 min. show.
December 2, 1946 sparked the beginning of a dark and chilling old time radio anthology based on a series of adaptations from Doubleday Crime Club. The shows begin with the telephone ringing... only to be answered by the ominous tones of the Librarian, played by Raymond E. Johnson (best known for his work on “The Inner Sanctum”), who narrates a spine-tingling mystery. Crime Club was directed by Roger Bowen and some of the more hair-raising scripts were done by Willis Cooper of "Lights Out" and "Quiet, Please" fame. The Dec. 2,1946 show aired on Monday from 8 to 8:30 PM and the other shows aired on Thursdays from 10 to 10:30 PM.
The shows are:
Crime Club- December 2, 1946. "Death Blew Out The Match". The first show of the series. Set on a fog-bound island, a classic case of murder where the butler did it, or did he? The first 30 seconds of the program opening were lost per a notation on the disc.
Crime Club- January 22, 1947. "Mr. Smith's Hat". A man calls the police to say he's going to be murdered. Ten seconds later, the man's daughter calls to say she just found the body.
Crime Club- May 22, 1947. "Murder on Margin". When a stock broker is murdered, his shoes provide the needed clue.
Crime Club- June 5, 1947. "Murder Rents A Room". A rich man dies but most of his money is missing. The man's ne'er-do-well nephew is suspect.
Crime Club- June 12, 1947. "Death Is A Knockout". A crime story with an unusual twist. The racketeer who tries to fix the prizefight is found murdered!
Crime Club- June 19, 1947. "Hearses Don't Hurry". A crusading prosecutor suspects that the daughter of his mentor is involved in several murders.
Crime Club- June 26, 1947. "Death Never Doubles". A lawyer and a crook are doubles and the crook's mob mistakes the lawyer for their old boss.
Crime Club- July 3, 1947. "Death At 7:10". Susan Ward Steel, a woman everybody hated, is dying of atropine poisoning in the compartment of a mystery writer on a train. Her story is told through flashbacks.
There are sixteen 16" transcriptions for these 8 shows. Each transcription is 15 minutes since the 2nd side is blank.
These 16" transcription records will only play on a transcription turntables with a 9" free arm. All discs are in Very Good to Excellent condition with the original paper sleeves which should be replaced since they’re almost 70 years old. The discs are clean and uncracked with no skips or flaking. Two of the discs have tiny chips on the outside of the discs that won’t effect their playing. I will ship them in sturdy packing by USPS media mail.
