- Label & Cat #: 1961 Impulse! ?– A-5-S, Impulse! ?– STEREO A-5 *First stereo pressing of this album with orange and black labels and white print at bottom, "A Product of Am-Par Record Corp. Printed In U.S.A." "RVG STEREO" stamped in the dead wax.
- Vinyl Grade: VG+ play graded *although numerous light scuff/spindle marks, the quality of sound is strong and brilliant! Other than some light & intermittent extraneous noise that filtered through, only 2 tracks presented real noise disturbances. There were a half-dozen light ticks on "Stolen Moments" and at the very end of the "Cascades" track a surface mark produced a series of @20 ticks. These were all soft and muted in nature, not sharp at all. All other tracks played VG+ and better!
- Cover Grade: EX *extremely nice gatefold with minimal light shelf wear. Original "abstract" cover, as opposed to later pressings with a photo of Oliver Nelson. This cover was quickly withdrawn. Also unlike later pressings, the cover and label credit the album to all six musicians and not just to Nelson.
- Notes: Blues and the Abstract Truth is Oliver Nelson's triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic "Stolen Moments," but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section. (AllMusic)

- All records are sleeved and removed from jacket to prevent any seam splitting, and both then shipped inside a poly album sleeve.
- (M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way. Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
- (NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.
- (EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear.
- (VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.
- (VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming.
- (G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
