ORIGINAL 1985 UK 1st PRESS VINYL 12” 45RPM 3-TRACK EP

Opal was formed initially under the name Clay Allison by the duo of David Roback of Rain Parade and Kendra Smith, who had recently departed The Dream Syndicate. The two had established a working relationship during the short-lived Rainy Day project in 1983. On the first release actually credited to Opal, the Northern Line 12" of 1985, singer Kendra Smith's chilling register marries the intellectual chanteuse inflections of Rickie Lee Jones with the frigid, androgynous Teutonicity of Nico. Roback caresses her psalms with dreamlike arrangements featuring psychedelic, blues and country influences. The songs become timeless watercolors. The tender and lighthearted country ballad "Northern Line", sung almost in a trance, evoke the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane of their rural period. The sleepy cocktail lounge blues-jazz of "Empty Bottles". The closing track, “Soul Giver”, mixes organ and guitar, percussion and vocals, into an imperious 8 and a half minute anthem - one of the all-time greatest jams in the history of rock music. A paradise of drug-fueled ecstasy and clinical irony. Roback's guitar in the final three minutes is utterly brilliant.

Vinyl: Near Mint. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects.The labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And the vinyl is not warped.
