Orchestra Baobab - Pirates Choice, World Circuit WCB 014

Legendary release, of Cuban-influenced West African pop, from this West African band. Baobab show their mastery in interweaving the various elements which consist their music and execute with utter perfection. The guitar playing of Barthelemy Attisso (Baobab's all-time trademark) stands out throughout the album, while Rudy Gomis and Balla Sidibe on vocals and Issa Cissoko on sax are on a par with him. Whether they speak of war in the Casamance region (as in "Utru Horas"), of the Gabonese president's wife (in "Ledi D'jeme Bodj") or about a lost love (as in "Coumba", sung in adorably West African-accented French), Baobab generate extremely beautiful songs; so simple, so rare.

Vinyl: NM. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
