PRESTIGE: PRLP-7044 "COLLECTORS' ITEMS" MILES DAVIS
Early Pressing MILES DAVIS LP on the PRESTIGE Label
This auction is for an early pressing, mono, black on yellow, Bergenfield, NJ address label, PRESTIGE Records, 1956 release of "COLLECTORS' ITEMS" PRLP-7044, by MILES DAVIS, complete with DEEP GROOVE. The album features: MILES DAVIS - trumpet; SONNY ROLLINS and "CHARLIE CHAN" - tenor; WALTER BISHOP or TOMMY FLANAGAN - piano; PAUL CHAMBERS or PERCY HEATH - bass; and PHILLY JOE JONES or ART TAYLOR - drums. There are actually two different sessions on this album: The first recorded in January, 1953 and the second in March, 1956. From what I've read, the true identity of the tenor player named "Charlie Chan" is actually CHARLIE PARKER!! Apparantly "BIRD" had been black-listed from recording due to his substance abuse issues but was invited by Miles to the session to play tenor saxophone, supposedly, only the second time he ever recorded playing the larger horn. He was listed with the ironic pseudonym "Charlie Chan" from the 1953 recording date and can be heard on three tunes.
The LP is not play graded but visually I would rate it NM based on Goldmine standards: Disc has retained nearly all of its original luster and looks beautiful. There are no visible scratches or scuffs and appears well cared for. Minimal spindle marks with some light names written on the labels in red ink. The original jacket also looks nice with full gloss intact and shows light wear, with no writing, marks, or dings. The seams are intact and tight with no seam splits except the beggining of some fatigue of approx. 2 1/2" on the center of the bottom edge. Some wear to corners with a mild dings on the upper and lower right, and along the opening edge. Back cover is also in nice condition with very light wear with no writing, marks, or dings except a small name stamp on the upper edge. Record ships with a non-original inner sleeve. No reserve!
