First let me state that I am not an expert when it comes to grading records. I am going to describe this item to the best of my ability using the points used by Discogs to determine condition. I apologize in advance if my description is a bit on the lengthy side. I want to make sure that all potential buyers have as much information as possible.
This auction is for an early pressing of Sun Ra's "Sleeping Beauty". I'll start with the vinyl first and then proceed to the cover.
The labels were hand written. The matrix on the one side is hand etched: 11-7-79 A . The label is marked EL SATURN SUN RA SLEEPING BEAUTY. This side contains the songs "Springtime Again" and "Door of the Cosmos". The matrix on the other side is marked 11-7-79 B. The label reads EL SATURN SUN RA along with SB (which I assume is the abbreviation for Sleeping Beauty). This side contains the song "Sleeping Beauty". The vinyl still has plenty of shine. There are a few surface scratches, finger prints and other smudges. I have not had this record cleaned. I did play both sides of the album. I am not an audiophile and I used my old circa 1980's Technic's turntable to do so. The album did not skip. There is surface noise but nothing I felt was unusual or overpowering. I really didn't notice any loud 'clicking/popping'. But keep in mind my equipment is old and relatively cheap. I would assume that a more expensive/advanced system would pick up substantially more in the way of noise distortion. The album lays flat upon a flat surface. It there is any warping it is slight. The line you see across the B side label is a flaw in the paper (perhaps due to when it was glued to the vinyl). It is not a scratch. In fact it is raised. The cover shows signs of wear. There is an Egyptian style print adhered to the front. The print is glossy. At the top right are the letters "S B" in the same handwriting and ink as used on the labels. Again, I assume that it's an abbreviation for Sleeping Beauty. The corners have been 'bumped' and show wear. There is a small (approx.1/2") split on the lower right. The cover is slightly yellowed at the edges. There are smudges and other marks. There is a small round circular stain at the bottom center that may have been caused by a sticker of some sort. When I acquired this record it had a generic white sleeve. I'm not sure if it's original. It shows signs of yellowing.
