In the late 1920's several budget record labels were launched in the UK including ‘Edison Bell Radio’. These records had a slightly narrower groove and smaller centre labels, and were able to compress 3 minutes onto a disc that was 20% smaller than standard 10-inch 78 rpm records.
Often the recordings were made by the same famous artistes and bands who appeared on top-price labels performing the same tunes. For contractual reasons their names had to be changed or not mentioned on these budget labels - but over the years many of the real performers have been identified by researchers.
Edison Bell’s entry into the 8-inch disc market came in 1928 when these records cost 1/3d (about 6p). Almost all were recorded and made in Britain. It was a high-quality product aimed at the popular market but, like many others, the label folded in 1932 during the Great Depression when few people had money for luxuries.
