This superb LP – a stil-sealed copy – from Columbia Masterworks (MS 6024, US pressing, label iteration unknown – presumably gray/black 6eye label, stereo) features Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra’s magnificent account of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 43, recorded in the warm acoustics of the Broadwood Hotel, Philadelphia, on 17 March 1957.

 

Ormandy was a fine Sibelian and had occasion to meet the composer at Järvenpää. He is entirely inside Sibelius’ sound world and the “Fabulous Philadelphians” play with  stirring ardor – wonderful from start to finish.

 

Incidentally, the strking cover photos were taken by Garry Winogrand. There are outstanding liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Charles Burr, printed in English only.

 

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the still-sealed jacket is near-MINT. There is slight bumping at corners, but really that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, other defects and the album remains very solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a fine collector's copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a still-sealed, pristine collector's copy.
