Description

redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This rare and handsome LP – the artwork is by the great Alex Steinweiss – from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4400, US pressing, blue label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a powerful and trenchant performance of Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op. 64, sumptuously recorded in the rich acoustics of the Academy of Music, Phiadelphia, on 19 November 1950.

There is an earlier Ormandy/Philadelphia recording of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth – made for RCA Victor in 15 March 1941, but this later account – his their first for Columbia Masterworks is on another plane entirely, richly moulded and with moving ardor. The low strings at the close of the First Movement have to be heard to be believed – the audio engineering here is quite impressive – a stunning Tchaikovsky Fifth all around.

There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Morris Hastings and the cover art, as mentioned above, is by Alex Steinweiss.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is light wear and discoloration along the edges and to the rear panel, but that is all. And though the seams are somewhat weak, there are no seamsplits. There are also no bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
