Description

Exceptionally rare deep-groove engineer's test pressings for the stereo release of Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", his first recording on Atlantic, SD 1317.  (The comparable commercial issue would have appeared on solid green labels.)  The two single-sided disks, manufactured by Presswell on October 8, l959 - less than five months after the May 22 recording session - were intended for in-house distribution only, for review by Tom Dowd and Nesuhi Ertegun's production team.  Often, Atlantic would produce several sets of these test pressings, each with a slightly different mix, until the desirable sound stage had been created.  Consequently, these pressings will frequently have a unique sound stage, different from the issued version.  Furthermore, these pressings are far earlier in the pre-production process than those which are distributed just prior to - or concurrent with - label and jacket printing.  Both disks are in near-new condition, perhaps played once or twice.  Note that both paper sleeves mis-identify the leader as "Charlie Mingus".  It is possible that Atlantic originally assigned SD1317 to Mingus' "Blues and Roots" and continued to delayed its production date, which would tend to explain the peculiar presence of the pinwheel logos on labels that should have been either black or green.
