We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a couple of weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. Here are original issues of Otis Redding’s first two UK releases, both on the London Atlantic label. Both these songs were released in the UK in 1964 although Pain In My Heart is dated 1963 on the label.

These are both very scarce singles now. Neither was a hit in the UK on their original release. Before you get too excited though, I should say that neither of these records is in very good condition. I’m listing them only because of their rarity value. If they were both decent examples I would of course, be selling them separately.

Pain In My Heart is the better of the two but still has lots and lots of surface scuffs and marks. On the plus side, it has no deep scratches and does play all the way through on both side with no loud clicks. As you would expect though, it does have background crackling which is more or less audible depending on how quiet a passage of music is playing. For the sake of completeness I should add that it also has a tiny edge chip to the surface of the B-side, which affects the first of the run-in grooves. This does not affect the playability of the record in any way.

Come To Me is similar - just with even more marks and scratches. In fact, if you just looked at it, you would assume it to be unplayable. Like lots of vinyl of this period though, it is amazing how much punishment it can take and still work. It plays all the way through on both sides without jumping or sticking but there is lots of crackling and a few louder clicks. The original owner's name is written to the A-side label in yellow crayon. If you don’t know the B-side of this single by the way, it is very interesting. It is as much a blues – or even a work of jazz – as it is a soul track.

In summary, I would suggest that you regard both these singles as no more than place-holders in your collection until better examples come along. I think that some people might possibly regard Pain In My Heart as acceptable – I’ve played it often and not found it impossible – but Come To Me really is a poor copy. If you bid with this information clearly in mind, you will not be disappointed. I am starting the bidding at a low price to reflect the condition.
