Otis Redding. TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS (Volt 141 – 1966). Choice MINT 45 copy of this scintillating remake of a 1933 Ted Lewis hit. Though this song didn’t reach the same chart success of “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” many feel that this record exemplified Redding’s vocal and emotional range unlike any other in his tragically, short-lived career. Others of note recorded the tune (it was Three Dog Night’s first song to chart), but nobody could knock it out of the park like Redding could.
Like Buddy Holly at age 22, Jim Croce at age 30, and John Denver at age 53, Redding also perished as the result of a plane crash, at age 26. As well as Hendrix, Morrison and Joplin in their mid-twenties, Redding died with so much promise ahead. He is greatly missed. I’M SICK Y’ALL (b/w).
