“Folk-Rock in a Stone Groove”… indeed. Here’s a bizarre outsider psych LP by Dane Sturgeon. The album is entitled “Wild ‘n’ Tender” on the Stur-Geon records label, number TS-100. This is an original pressing from 1967, and is the harder-to-find first press with the “statue” cover. Later copies had a picture of Sturgeon on the front. The cover is still in the shrinkwrap, and the vinyl grades Near Mint. The ringwear seen in the photo is actually on the shrink itself, and hasn’t transferred to the cover. I’ve owned (and enjoyed) a copy of this LP for years, and it is really hard to describe it- part psychedelic with fuzz tone guitar, part cowboy music, part Roy Orbison, part Phil Spector’s wall of sound… it’s all in there. Heck, the album was even recorded at Gold Star studios, the same place where Spector created all of those great records. And to top it off, the songwriting is just plain weird. “Ghost of Bardsley Road” is about a ghost on a motorcycle that races kids and kills them, with plenty of maniacal laughter. “Queen Bee” and “Hurricane” are a about a lover who ruins lives. “Whip of Love”… well, that needs no further explanation. The LP was interesting enough to gain mention in the acid archives.
