Description
Patti Smith - Horses
MEGA-RARE 1st US Press, with "Horses" Printed in White Lettering on the Front
Only the earliest pressings of this album possess this trait, as the cover was quickly reissued with "Horses" in black lettering (I suppose white lettering on a white background was too hard to read). Given that this album was never much of a seller (despite now being hailed as a classic in pretty much every "greatest albums" retrospective one comes across), this early withdrawn sleeve is far less common than, say, the original withdrawn sleeve of The Rolling Stones' Some Girls, which sold many copies upon its initial release. Thus, it's a rare variation of an already rare album.
MEGA-RARE STOCK COPY
Most copies of this withdrawn sleeve are white label promotional copies, as the correction was made VERY early in the mass stock production process, long after many promotional copies had been pressed and sent out. This, however, is one of the very few stock copies which was pressed AND sold to the public!
RARE LABEL VARIATION
A further confirmation of the age of this pressing is the label. Obviously it is the original blue and white Arista label. However, in contrast to the average copy of this album on this label, it is without the following text: "WARNING: Unauthorized reproduction of this recording is prohibited by Federal law and subject to criminal prosecution." This text appears beneath the producer credit on later pressings, but is absent on early first pressings such as this.
MASTERED BY BOB LUDWIG
"STERLING RL" appears in the deadwax on both sides, indicating that each was mastered by the legendary Robert (Bob) Ludwig at Sterling Sound. Ludwig's work always sounds great - sharp channel separation, full lows, clean highs, and overall lots of texture!

Jacket
Jacket is in very nice condition. The front and back show little ringwear, despite being mostly white. The spine shows some wear, but neither it nor the top and bottom seams are split. The top seam is unglued from within. From that I mean that the small cardboard lip that runs from the front half to the back half has come unglued from where it attaches to the rear slick on the inside. However, the top seam remains intact, as the front and rear slicks remain glued in place (i.e. with the front slick running onto the back and under the rear slick). The problem is merely that the seam isn't "supported" by the cardboard. Just look at the picture and you'll immediately know what I'm talking about. It can be repaired, but we will leave that up to the buyer. There are no cut-outs.
Jacket grade: VG+
Vinyl
Vinyl is in good condition. Side A does show quite a few fine, "hairline" scratches and other faint sleeve removal marks. There is also a scuff on "Birdland" that causes some background noise, but nothing too obtrusive. Side B looks better and is graded VG+ (Side A is VG). The album has definitely seen its share of plays, but still sounds pretty damn good, just with some background noise.
Vinyl grade: VG
Includes the original Arista liner.
Label/catalog: Arista / AL-4066
