PAUL AND DAVE: JAZZ INTERWOVEN

Fantasy 3-20 10” LP

Red Vinyl

SIGNED by Dave Brubeck!

Red vinyl LP is very clean and plays well (just gave it a turn on my Rega P2 turntable). No skips or scratches. Cover is split along the top, and bottom has 50% split. Front shows normal wear and has Brubeck’s signature in black ink;, back cover looks great. Please see photos.

Non-smoking, pet-free home.

Packed carefully and sent promptly.

“Sublime early work from the team of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond – working here in a hand-in-glove relationship that's every bit as interwoven as the title might imply! The notes don't list too much to support the "concert versions" in the way of dates or location – but the recording does appear to be live, with a bit more room, and a bit more openness than on some of the group's studio recordings. Desmond sounds wonderful on a version of "Stardust" – and other titles include "At A Perfume Counter" and "Crazy Chris".”

“The album is highly regarded by collectors for its rare live recordings and its unique aesthetic, being one of the last 10-inch records Fantasy produced before switching to the 12-inch format.”

Critical Review & Reception

  • Performance Quality: Critics generally praise the performances, noting that the live tracks often capture more "energy and emotion" than Brubeck's more polished studio recordings on Columbia. Paul Desmond's playing is frequently highlighted as the "selling point," featuring his signature lyrical and "wistful" alto saxophone tone.
  • Audio Fidelity: Reviews describe the sound quality as variable. While the tracks from the University of California, Berkeley are noted for having superior fidelity (some say better than the famous Jazz Goes to College LP), other live portions suggest they were recorded on amateur equipment, resulting in a less-than-audiophile experience.
  • Historical Context: It is often described as a "tantalizing" record for fans because it hints at full concerts sitting in the Fantasy vaults that were never released in their entirety. The album famously lacks detailed liner notes, featuring only a reprinted magazine review on the back cover instead of track data.
