· COMMENTS / ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Here’s a real rarity! Unknown one-of-a-kind acetate album by extremely obscure jazz trio. Features Paul Collins on piano w/Dave Elliott (bass) and Dick Atkinson (drums). Homemade ultra-thick gatefold cover wrapped in black construction paper with two paper paste-ons – DIY illustration by (Robin Thornally) and liner notes by Atkinson, who disparages his and Elliott’s “inept” playing while heaping praise on Collins’ virtuosity! Tunes are by Miles Davis (“Milestones” & “Nardis”), Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk" and "Israel" by John Carisi. Recorded at Hertz Studios (location unidentified).
Though Collins may not be as brilliant as the liner notes suggest, his band mates aren’t nearly as incompetent, either. Collins clearly is the star of the group with excellent technique, interesting ideas and good emotional range, especially on the modal tracks; while Elliott and Atkinson are solid in support. The recording is lo-fi and a bit noisy (not unusual for acetates), but the music comes through clearly. I would provide some sound clips but I don’t want to risk damaging the acetate with the needle on my USB turntable.
Since there appears to be no information about this album online, feel free contact me if you have any!

LP GRADING GUIDELINES
- Guidelines reflect TYPICAL factors determining grade - variations are noted in the description
- Please note: I DO NOT USE EXCELLENT (EX) as a grade.
- Flaws for ALL covers graded below VG+ are noted in the description.
- I rarely use grades below VG, and all vinyl graded VG or less is appropriately spot play-graded to assure sound quality.
- Grades below G are not listed, as I typically do not sell merchandise in such condition.
- Intermediate grades (e.g., NM-, VG/VG+, VG++) are used, as applicable.
- MINT: Factory Sealed; cover virtually flawless.
- NM+ (Near Mint Plus) - Factory sealed with minor cover flaws, OR an otherwise mint LP recently opened by me and played in spots for demonstration purposes.
- NM (Near Mint) - vinyl, cover and labels nearly flawless.
- VG+ (Very Good Plus) - what many refer to as "excellent"; pretty close to NM. Full or nearly full-gloss vinyl with a few hairlines, minor surface scuffs and/or sleeve marks; possibly one or a couple small, light scratches (inaudible or causing unobtrusive soft clicks, noted as applicable in the description) on an otherwise NM piece. Expect only slight surface noise in spots. Cover has slight general wear and/or aging, OR minimal wear/aging and a couple of minor flaws (noted as applicable in the description).
- VG (Very Good) - Vinyl still glossy, possibly with slight graying; has a few or some light scuffs, sleeve marks and hairlines, possibly a few small light scratches. Expect only slight surface noise in spots.
- VG- (Very Good Minus) - Vinyl typically glossy with slight or some graying; generally has all of the flaws noted in the VG grade to a greater degree (hairlines, light scuffs, surface marks, small light scratches, sleeve marks). Expect slight or some surface noise that's noticeable but NOT overwhelming.
- G (Good) - Vinyl typically still glossy with some graying; generally has some scuffs, surface marks and light scratches, plus lots of sleeve marks and hairlines. Expect some surface noise throughout that's noticeable but NOT overwhelming - NO skips, sticks, heavy scuffs, deep scratches, excessive noise, or loud pops or clicks (unless noted in description).
