ITEM: Paul Quinichette LP, "Moods", recorded on November 4, 1954, and released on the EmArcy label in 1955. Catalog number is MG-36003, High Fidelity Recording.
COMMENTS/CONDITION: FIRST PRESSING?? When I bought this album many years ago from a local jazz collector, I was told that it is a First Pressing. In addition to the catalog number being stamped in the trail-off on both sides, "A1" is also in the trail-offs, just before the catalog numbers. He said this indicated a first pressing. I am not familiar with EmArcy's method of indicating a first pressing, if a member has some information, please email me!
This LP came from a private collection and is in excellent playing condition. The record was visually graded, and was test played. Grading is according to Goldmine Standards. If you are not familiar with that system, please go to the Goldmine web site and read the grading details BEFORE YOU BID.
Vinyl is in a VG++ to VG+++ condition with a nice gloss luster. It is NOT a badly "fogged" or "clouded" LP as so many of the early EmArcy LP's are. There are a few light wispy marks on the deadwax at the beginning, between the tracks, and at the end, that are consistent with being stored in a lined anti-static inner sleeve over a period of time. They have no effect on the playback.There are no warps, deep scratches, cracks, chips, or groove wear. On close inspection under a bright light source, a few light scuffs and hairlines can be detected, which appear cosmetic only, and do not affect the playback or enjoyment of the recordings. On my older system, both sides played quietly with no background noise, ticks, pops, skips, or groove lock. The sound quality was very good. NOTE: Sound quality will vary from system to system. The above comments are included strictly as reference, and are not a statement as to the results you will experience with your equipment.
Labels are in excellent, clean condition with no peeling edges, writing, or stains. Colors are bright with no fading. The center holes are perfectly round and shows no signs of repeated playing.
I have replaced the anti-static inner sleeve with a standard issue plain white paper sleeve.
Other than some tanning from age, and a price written (in pencil) in small numbers on the top right corner of the back panel, the thick cardboard cover is in VG++ or better condition, with no stickers, labels, or price tags. Colors and graphics are crisp with no fading, even after 57 YEARS! The cover has no warps, creased corners, rips, or tears (there is a superficial "bump" on the lower right corner tip). The laminate covering the front panel is in excellent condition with absolutely no bubbles or separations. There are several tiny tanning spots along the top of the laminate, which possibly may be removed with the proper cleaning agent. NOTE: Other than gently wiping the record with a damp cotton cloth before playing it, I did not attempt to clean the cover or the LP. Most serious collectors have their own preferred methods they use to maintain their vinyl.
The spine is undamaged and is easily readable. All seams are strong with no splits. The top seam has minor shelf wear/scuffs near the spine side. There is one small spot (approximately 1.5 inches long by .25 inches wide) where a bubble has formed under the paper overlay on the back panel.
