This album is from Paul Simon the American singer-songwriter known both for his solo work and his collaboration with Art Garfunkel. He and his school friend Garfunkel, whom he met in 1953, came to prominence in the 1960s as Simon & Garfunkel. Their blend of folk and rock served as a soundtrack to the counterculture movement. As a solo artist, Simon has explored genres including gospel, reggae and soul and is among the world's best-selling music artists of all time. He has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has been the recipient of sixteen Grammy Awards.
The self-produced Graceland is Simon’s seventh solo studio album. It was engineered by Roy Halee and was released on August 25, 1986. It features an eclectic mixture of genres, including pop, rock, a cappella, zydeco, isicathamiya and mbaqanga, inspired by the music of South Africa. Simon and Halee spent two weeks in Johannesburg recording with South African musicians. Further recordings were held in the US with American musicians including Linda Ronstadt and the Everly Brothers. Simon toured with South African musicians, performing their music and songs from Graceland. The record became Simon's most successful studio album and his highest-charting album in over a decade. It is estimated to have sold more than 16 million copies worldwide.
