The Not Forgotten Association is easily ex-Cream lyricist Peter Brown’s rarest album, and also his most obscure. You’d be hard pressed to find a “single” in the conventional term here – this is pretty much Pete’s poetry slam album, backed by a host of assorted studio musicians, including Viv Stanshall. It ain’t a Battered Ornaments record, nor is it Piblokto, and it’s also not nearly as dreadful as I probably already made it seem. Imagine King Crimson circa Islands with a beat poet taking lead vocals and you might get some idea what Not Forgotten Association is about. As a matter of fact, the drifty ethereal “Ballad for the Queen of Outer Space” sounds quite similar to “Formentera Lady,” at least musically. And on the exotic, quixotic “Night Lament,” Pete takes us on a journey through the streets of Bombay, with frantic tablas, strumming guitars and finger cymbals. This is the very definition of a “head” album – you can travel great distances with it, but your mind has to do all the work ‘cuz there ain’t no grooves to move the rest of your body. But Pete’s lyrics, his cadence, and the jazzy gentle exotica he uses sparingly behind his poetry can move you like a musical movie through the beatnik revolution of early 70’s England. Only the most adventurous need apply.
